Validate this scenario

Take your estimate further

The calculator shows what an improvement could be worth. A detailed assessment helps identify which assumptions matter most, what relevant data is available and how we could test the opportunity against your current approach.

What happens next

  1. We review the scenario and business figures you submit.
  2. We clarify the product, portfolio segment and outcomes you want to assess.
  3. We identify a suitable scope for a backtest or proof of concept.

Share your scenario and a little more about your portfolio. Our team will review the request and discuss the next step. This does not generate an automatic report.

Add more context (optional)

Additional lending volume is the amount lent, not revenue or profit; holding the same risk level is a condition to validate.

How is this calculated?

Find out where additional approvals could come from

The calculator shows what an approval increase could be worth. A detailed assessment helps identify the relevant applicant segment, risk constraints and data needed to test that opportunity.

What happens next

  1. We review your scenario and current approval approach.
  2. We clarify the population and risk level you want to assess.
  3. We identify a suitable scope for a backtest or PoC.

More approvals only create value when the loans make sense

The opportunity depends on who is approved, how many customers take up an offer and the contribution those loans generate after relevant costs and expected losses.

Your current funnel

Applications, approval rates and take-up establish how many loans you fund today.

The additional lending

Your assumed approval increase shows how many more applicants might receive an offer and go on to fund.

The financial contribution

Contribution per additional loan translates that volume into an estimated business benefit.

How is the estimate calculated?

The calculator applies your assumed approval-rate increase to application volume, then uses the take-up rate to estimate additional funded loans.

Additional funded loans are multiplied by average loan amount to estimate lending volume, and by contribution per loan to estimate financial value.

An approval-rate increase is expressed in percentage points. For example, an increase from 40% to 45% is five percentage points.

Contribution should account for expected credit losses, funding costs and variable servicing costs. Model enquiry costs are shown separately where included.

Find stronger risk evidence around your approval boundary

Carrington Labs helps lenders assess applicants whose risk may not be fully distinguished by an existing score or policy.

Improve risk separation

Develop a lender-specific risk view around your product, borrowers and observed outcomes.

Explore second-look opportunities

Assess a defined group of referred or narrowly declined applicants using relevant additional risk evidence.

Test before changing policy

Compare alternative approval or referral strategies while retaining control over risk appetite and final decisions.

Run a proof of concept in 48 hours.

Move from an assumed approval increase to evidence from your own applicants. Once we’ve agreed the applicant population, risk constraints and data, we run the PoC and deliver the findings within 48 hours.

  1. 1

    Agree the objective

Define the applicant population, current approval approach and risk measures to compare.

  2. 2

    Confirm the relevant data

Review available application, model and outcome information, and identify any gaps.

  3. 3

    Run the agreed assessment

Evaluate risk separation and simulate relevant approval strategies within the agreed scope.

  4. 4

    Review the findings

Assess the evidence, potential contribution and limitations before deciding what to test next.

The 48 hours start once we’ve agreed the scope and your data is complete and ready. The PoC covers the agreed scope; production deployment is a separate step.

Understand the evidence behind the additional lending

An agreed PoC can assess where a different risk view may support changes to approval or referral strategies. Historical outcomes may not be available for previously declined applicants. The assessment will identify what can be measured and where further evidence is needed. Scope and deliverables are agreed before the 48-hour clock starts.

  1. Comparison with your current score, model or agreed baseline.

  2. Analysis of relevant applicant segments.

  3. Approval and risk scenario comparisons.

  4. Potential contribution under stated assumptions.

  5. Findings, limitations and recommended next steps.

Frequently asked questions

Who is this calculator for?
It is for lending teams exploring portfolio growth. It does not estimate an individual borrower’s approval odds or provide loan offers.
Does a higher approval rate mean higher profit?
Not automatically. Take-up, loan economics, expected losses and the risk profile of additional borrowers all affect the result.
Does the calculator prove we can approve more at the same risk?
No. It illustrates the value of that scenario. A backtest or PoC evaluates whether the evidence supports it for the relevant population.
What is second-look underwriting?
It is the reassessment of a defined group of declined or referred applicants using additional risk evidence. It is not a blanket override of credit policy.
How should we estimate contribution per loan?
Use an estimate after expected credit losses, funding costs and variable servicing costs. Do not use the loan amount or gross interest income as a substitute for contribution.
When does the 48-hour turnaround start?
It starts once we’ve agreed the scope and your data is complete and ready for assessment. The PoC findings for that scope are delivered within 48 hours. Production deployment is agreed separately.
